Information Overload Day (October 15th this year) is described as thus

“In a world of around-the-clock media, advertising, text messages, emails, television and Internet access, it’s a good job that we can slow down, take a deep breath, and relax on Information Overload Day. Step away from your computer, turn off your phone, and enjoy life without being overwhelmed!”

Of course when you run a business and market online it’s nigh on impossible to that for just one day

The big question we always get is how do you cope with Twitter / Facebook / LinkedIn and so on … it all just appears as one big stream of noise and I can’t keep up with all the messages

Well at Altrincham HQ we run Social Media campaigns for lots of local businesses spending 200+ hours a month managing Social Media for clients

Here are some tips to make it easier

Twitter Lists
TWITTER – USE TWITTER LISTS
When you follow a lot of people it’s inevitable you won’t see every tweet and there’s a danger you could miss important ones

Twitter Lists are a useful way to categorise tweeters so that when you get 10 minutes you can dip into each list and see what important contacts are saying

To give you an idea how I categorise my core lists as
* Networking – People I Network With Offline at Business Meetings
* Training Clients – Businesses I’ve trained in the past – it’s always about long term relationships
* Social Media News – Social Media Thought Leaders from around the world
* Altrincham – Key Tweeters in my local town
* Friends – Well it’s social media for a reason and it can’t all be business

By using twitter lists it allows me to cut through the noise and help support those people I Meet Like Know and Trust

Facebook Interest Lists
FACEBOOK – USE CLOSE FRIENDS LISTS & INTEREST LISTS
Again like Twitter Lists – Close Friends and Interest Lists allow you to cut through the noise and see those important updates

When you think over the years how many Facebook Friends you’ve added up and how many pages you’ve liked the sheer number of status updates each day mounts up

By using these lists you can cut out the old school friends, the baby photos, the passive aggressive status updates and more

Trust me – do this today – the close friends list is so so liberating to be relieved of not seeing every single status update

And the interest lists are great way to categorise varied interests from local to music to business etc

LinkedIn Email Settings
LINKEDIN – TURN OFF 99% OF EMAIL NOTIFICATIONS
Simple Simple Simple and quick way to stop LinkedIn annoying you from the outset

Go into your Privacy and Communication Settings and turn off the group digest emails

The one key email to receive each day is the Network Updates Daily Digest Email – the rest in the main take away from how useful LinkedIn actually is

Google Plus Circles
GOOGLE+ – CIRCLE PEOPLE YOU DON’T ALREADY FOLLOW ON OTHER NETWORKS
When people are questioning the validity of Google+ it’s usually down to the fact they’re seeing exactly the same updates as they see on Twitter / Facebook et all

Although it’s not a Social Network we use as frequently as the others we have found the best value comes from following brand new people based on interest and location that we don’t already follow on the other networks

One of the biggest problems with Information Overload is the repetition of information across different platforms – not necessary the amount of information thrown at you
