I want to talk you through a simple 10 minute exercise to improve your social Media Marketing

It’s something we’ve introduced to our social media workshops and it really helps you assess the gap between where you are now and where you could be with your social media marketing

Get a brew and a pen and paper now before reading the rest of this blog as I really want you to take action after reading this rather than get distracted by a notification and move on

THE SHORT VERSION

Imagine this is year zero for social media and your business and you can design social media from the ground up

  1. Take 5 minutes writing down on pen and paper What would the perfect social media look like for your organisation if you started today?
  • Dream Big
  • Make this year zero
  • Write down 5 things you’d like to see on social media for your business / brand

2. Now spend 5 minutes looking at the last 20 posts you posted on social media

Be Honest

Be critical

Think of your target customers – does it appeal to them

Ask yourself does it resemble what the perfect social media would look like for your organisation

THE LONG VERSION

Imagine this is year zero for social media and your business and you can design social media from the ground up

  1. Take 5 minutes writing down on pen and paper What would the perfect social media look like for your organisation if you started today

Dream Big

What I want you do is genuinely dream big – so so big that you can’t believe what you’re thinking

I want you to avoid excuses and all the barriers people put in their way for not using social media to its full potential

If you’re a small business I want you to think like a national company

If you’re a larger business I want you to imagine you have just doubled your staff and your marketing budget

There are no limits

Make this year zero

Do not think on what has been done before

This is literally year zero for your social media marketing plan

I don’t want you to overthink what has gone well previously or what has not gone so well on social media

I want this to start from a total blank canvas to explore as many possibilities as possible

You are god

On the 7th Day God Created Manchester and on the 8th Day You Created Your Social Media Plan

Write down 5 things you’d like to see on social media for your business / brand

When I say write down 5 things you’d like to see on social media for your business / brand I’m advising it like the government advise people to eat their 5 a day

It’s better to write down more than 5, but 5 sounds palatable to the average business owner

I know you’re better than the average and you will come up with more than 5 things you’d like to see on social media for your brand

You’re better than that

2. Now spend 5 minutes looking at the last 20 posts you posted on social media

Be Honest

Be critical

Think of your target customers – does it appeal to them

Ask yourself does it resemble what the perfect social media would look like for your organisation

The hard truth for some businesses is that 100% of their social media output is to all intents and purposed defunct and pointless – it’s that far from the ideal they might as well as not been on social media

For some businesses this exercise is tough because they’ll have “Rip It Up and Start Again” as Edwyn Collins and Orange Juice sang

The silver lining is that for the majority of businesses it’s often a tweak, some better content, fresh ideas and small incremental changes

When we deliver social media training workshops for businesses often it’s 30-50% of what they do that they need to change and it’s manageable for all concerned

But I do refer you to the above – Be Honest and Be Critical
