Altrincham – A Visitors Guide

By October 10, 2019June 23rd, 2022No Comments

Being so close to Manchester Airport and Manchester City Centre, Altrincham has something for everyone

Altrincham Market has become a haven for day trippers and we can’t forget about the people that travel in town for sporting events such Altrincham FC, Manchester Storm, Manchester United, Lancashire Country Cricket Ground, Manchester City or a theatre of music performance

The town is full of visitors for large scale events such as Manchester Pride, Manchester International Festival and large concerts at Manchester Arena

And every single day of the week there are business travellers staying at hotels for meetings and nearby expos

At Altrincham HQ we’ve lived in the town for nearly 40 years, so here’s our Visitors Guide to Altrincham

Pitta Crepe Flowers

BEST PLACE TO GET FOOD NEAR THE TRAIN STATION
Pitta Crepe did streetfood way before it became a buzzword and excuse to overprice everything

If you fancy something alternative, fresh, healthy and tasty at great prices then look no further!

Serving a range of sweet crêpes and flat bread wraps (including Falafel, Moroccan lamb, Chicken tikka and other homemade fillings)

The wraps will easily fill you up before a few drinks around town, but we’d recommend being indulgent and going for a meal deal with fries as well

Pitta Crepe is literally 1 minutes walk from the station – look for Pure Gym and head up the slope next to it. You can’t miss this tasty streetfood van

Altrincham Clock

NEAREST PUB TO THE TRAIN STATION
The nearest pub to the Station is literally just across the road from the Station and is called … erm … the Station

If you’re looking for a traditional boozer it doesn’t get more traditional than the Station

On a Sunday you’ll hear Karaoke blasting out most of the day

Other traditional pubs within walking distance of the Station are The Malt Shovels, The Roebuck and The Bricklayers Arms

BEST PLACES FOR COFFEE
Like any town in the UK, Altrincham isn’t short of coffee shops

We have so many you almost have a Coffee Shop Crawl where by the end of it you’re buzzing off your ****

But where are the best

Two Brothers Coffee – so popular, they even have their own blends you can buy to experience Two Brothers at home.

California Coffee & Wine – they have a simple mission to #MakeCoffeeGreatAgain☕️ and have the friendliest team ever with Justin and Diane (you’d expect it being American)

Gran T’s – An independent Coffee House inspired by the comforts & values of hospitality handed down from Gran T. They’re award winning, smiley as help and host their own cinema nights and knitting clubs

Rhode Island – A small independent chain, but one with that’s loved by the community. They have book swap tables and it’s one of the busiest places in Altrincham

WHERE TO CATCH A MOVIE
You have 2 choices

Posh or Normal

For posh opt for Everyman Cinema which is the comfiest most luxurious cinema experience you’ll ever have. Think of every cinema experience you’ve had and then rewrite what would make cinema perfection and you have Everyman. You pay the price for it, but it’s a lovely treat / date night experience

For normal opt for Vue Cinemas which as a Frankie and Benny’s attached to it. Films are just £4.99 or £5.99 depending on the night so it’s suitably priced for the whole family

WHERE TO CATCH LIVE MUSIC OR THEATRE
Ian Brown, John Squire, Morrissey, Johnny Marr and half of the Coronation Street cast have connections to Altrincham

It’s a little cultural hub at the last stop of the tram line

If you’re looking for Live Music then The Cinnamon Club is the place to be – jazz, soul, funk artists and choirs regularly perform there

For open mics and acoustic gems look to The Cheshire Tap on Saturday and Sunday afternoons and House and The Green Room on Thursday-Saturday nights

For theatre we have The Garrick Theatre for the large scale theatre experience complete with some comedy names and tribute acts and for up and coming names check out the Little Theatre on Oxford Road

Altrincham Fish Bar

BEST PLACE TO GET CHIPPY TEA
Altrincham doesn’t have a bad chippy – we might be on the border of Cheshire / Manchester, but chips are something we do well

So wherever you choose in Altrincham for chips you can can’t go wrong

The nearest chippy to the station is Kingfisher on Cross Street and the nearest chippy to Moss Lane is The Good Catch

For those staying at the Cresta Court Hotel there is the New Don literally 1 minutes walk from the hotel

But if we had to name the best chippy in Altrincham though it would have to be Altrincham Fish Bar up near the Market on Greenwood Street

It’s been in town for over 100 years and does the sort of chips you remember from childhood when chips used to come in newspapers

BEST PLACES FOR VEGAN
Altrincham is the home of the Vegetarian Society and it’s 2019 so you’ll find most places in town offer Vegan Options

But if I had to name 2 places that truly caters for Vegans they are Angkor Soul and Greenhouse

The Greenhouse has been there for years and is a traditional Vegetarian / Vegan Cafe. Soups, Sandwiches, Salads and a selection of cakes and desserts. It’s quaint and ran by a lovely team|

Angkor Soul is my favourite restaurant right now down to the fact is has an extensive vegan menu. I’m working my way through it now and have tried 4 different starters and 4 different mains and everyone has blown me away

BEST PLACES FOR GLUTEN FREE

Off The Wheaten Track is a gluten free deli / eatery in Altrincham

In fact it’s the first completely gluten free deli in Greater Manchester and has the mission of lacking in gluten not taste

The idea being that if you’re gluten-free come along and you’ll find everything you need – but bring your friends who don’t happen to be gluten free and they’ll still love it

BEST PLACE TO EAT HEALTHY

Altrincham used to have it’s own healthy fast casual outlet with Eat Kaizen and we were sad to go

So if you’re looking for the best healthy eating place locally we recommend you take the 10 minute walk to Hale Village for The Garden

Beautiful healthy food that is not lacking in taste

You might want to wear your leisurewear on a visit, but seriously – have 3 courses here with a starter, main and dessert

The desserts are to die for

Burrito Picante TACOS

BEST PLACE TO GET FOOD ON THE GO
Burrito Picante on Railway Street is an absolute must

Think about the best burrito you’ve had before in your life – raise the bar – and you have Burrito Picante

Offering a range of burritos, nachos and naked burritos it’s something fresh for the town and offers really good value for money

Open till 9pm Monday – Saturday it’s a must

Essence Altrincham

BEST PLACE TO GET A CURRY
If you want the best place to get a curry in Altrincham it’s well worth the taxi ride to this out of town restaurant

Essence is situated on Manchester Road and is about 10 minutes walk / 3 minutes taxi ride out of town towards Broadheath

It’s been a family business for around 30 years now and is a firm favourite with locals over the years

Choosing Essence is easy – the only difficult decision here is whether to choose a Cobra or a Kingfisher

Get yourself down to see Amin and the lads – note it’s only open from 5.30pm Mon-Sat and 4pm onwards on Sundays

BEST RESTAURANTS THAT EXISTED BEFORE THE MARKET HALL REGENERATION
Every press article you read will mentioned the restaurants that opened after the Market Hall was re-imagined as a food hall

They conveniently forget that Altrincham has a host of brilliant restaurants before hand

Here are 3 you must check out

Yara – one of the best restaurants ever. A Lebanese / Syrian gem that is perfect if you love halloumi, falafel, moussaka, shawarma, kibbeh and lots of pitta bread. It BYOB as well

Phanthong – a Thai delight on regent road (although Nahm Prik is making grounds with the vegan menu on offer)

Cocos – Recently under new ownership we’ll have to see if Cocos maintains it’s legendary status as one of the best Italians in town

Con Club Alty Beer

BEST PLACE TO GET CRAFT ALE / REAL ALE
Altrincham has a lot of Craft Ale, Real Ale and Belgian Beer bars

So if you like beers like Joy Diversion, Hoppy Monday and Juice Springsteen look below

Costellos tends to be a popular choice for Altrincham FC Fans

The market has a host of bars with bars such as Pi, The Con Club, The Belgian Bar and Mort Subite

Whilst Stamford New Road  and Kings Court has the likes of Rustic, Batch Bottle Store, Libero and The Cheshire Tap

Kings Court SUN

BEST PLACE TO DRINK OUTSIDE
IF it’s a sunny day you probably want somewhere you can have a few pints outdoors

One of our favourite bars is the Con Club and there’s the new sun trap which is Icon (formerly The Old Mill / The Barrington)

In Altrincham there are 2 main places for drinking outdoors with Goose Green and Kings Court

In Goose Green you get the aforementioned Costellos alongside House, The Green Room, King Pong, Tavern On The Green and Traders Tiki Bar

In Kings Court you get aforementioned Cheshire Tap with Kings Cafe and The Ivy League

Both areas are open to late so if you’re staying over in Altrincham then you can party till 2am or 3am

Altrincham Market

BEST PLACE TO TAKE THE FAMILY
If you’re looking for somewhere family friendly there are plenty of “named” choices or chains in Altrincham

Wetherspoons is about 5 minutes walk from the station

Nandos has just opened and is right near the train station – but is proving so popular at the moment there are longer waiting times at peak times

Tim Hortons is next to Nandos

Frankie & Benny’s is next to the cinema mentioned above

Little Dessert Co is opposite the train station

And if you want food and play there is The Treehouse on George Street

We can’t have a guide to Altrincham without mentioning Altrincham Market and the revived market house

It was a big turning point for Altrincham and features a glut of foodie places offering pizza, pies, steak et all

Opposite to the Market is The Con Club Altrincham which is perfect on a Summers Day to sit outside in and friendly inside for winters nights
