Marginal Gains is the buzzword of the moment in sport, but it’s one that can be applied to business marketing
For those that aren’t aware of what marginal gains is it’s the very simple idea of “The doctrine of marginal gains is all about small incremental improvements in any process adding up to a significant improvement when they are all added together”
I’ve used marginal gains to improve my own health recently with small improvements to portion sizes, calorie control, frequency of exercise, intensity of exercise, sleep patterns and so on. I’ve lost over 4 and 1/2 stone recently as a result of this
1% improvement doesn’t sound a significant improvement to change your business with. But imagine improving 25 areas of your marketing by 1% – would that impact your business in a significant way? It probably would
2 of the biggest barriers to progress we see on social media are these 2 ideas
- It’s too big of a leap from where we are now as a company – we just don’t get social media
- We know enough to get by and therefore we are doing ok with Social Media
Like Athletes you should spend every waking hour of your day looking at the individual areas of your marketing and how you can focus on and improve each aspect of your social media marketing
When it comes to Social Media Management for clients we often focus on very specific areas of the social media campaign one by one to improve the overall campaign
When it comes to Social Media Training for businesses – it’s often those small shifts of 20% in daily activity that make huge difference to results the business gets
So imagine if you could break down social media to the following areas and improve as below
AUDIENCE
1% more Twitter followers
1% more Facebook fans
1% more LinkedIn Connections
1% more Instagram followers
1% more blog readers
CONTENT
1% more photos for social media
1% more videos for social media
1% more blogs on your website
1% more press articles to distribute on social media
1% more people helping you with social media content
1% better quality content across the board
ENGAGEMENT
1% more Twitter retweets
1% more Twitter replies
1% more Facebook / LinkedIn shares
1% more Facebook / LinkedIn comments
1% more Instagram likes
1% more Instagram comments
1% more blog comments
1% more referrals
CONVERSION
1% more link clicks
1% more mailing list signups
1% more event sign ups
1% more phone calls
1% more email enquiries
SALES
20% more repeat purchases
20% more new customers
Does that sound like it would benefit for your business?

Hi Alex, that’s a very interesting concept… I like your “marginal gain” process – it can be applied in many areas of a business. Thanks for this!
