Untappd Logo

UnTappd is an app we’ve been using on and off for the latter half of 2017

If you’re not familiar with the app the easiest way of describing it is as a “TripAdvisor review app for Beer”

The app describes itself as a place to Discover and share your favourite beer.

Just as Britain is a nation of foodies, it’s also a nation of beer drinkers

So here’s the lowdown on Untappd for drinkers (and later on we give some tips for pubs looking to use it for business)

Cheshire Tap

WHAT IS UNTAPPD?
Untappd is a geosocial networking service and mobile phone application that allows its users to check into beers as they drink them, and share these check-ins and their locations with their friends

The latest figures have stated there 7 million users who review beer on the app

BUT CAN’T YOU JUST CHECK IN TO FACEBOOK ANYWAY?
Ok you can do that – and do still check in to Facebook with your group shots in a pub

But Dave’s just had 8 pints doesn’t give off the best impressions on Facebook and half of your audience won’t be interested

Think of Untappd as a microcosm where you won’t be judged on how much you drink

And more importantly a place where people share the same passions as you for trying something different

You probably won’t get Joe Bloggs asking for a pint of non specific on Untappd

OK – SO WHAT DO I DO WITH A CHECK IN?

It takes a minute to do all of this – it’s very very easy

1. Order your beer
2. Take a photo of it
3. Search for the beer on untappd – add your photo
4. Click Checkin
5. Leave your comments on the beer
6. Rate it out of 5
7. Choose the serving style
8. Tag Friends
9. Tag Location
10. Add flavor profile

WHAT THE HELL AM I SUPPOSED TO WRITE IN A REVIEW
Some people just rate out of 5 and don’t leave a comment, but here’s a few example of review of beers in bars we regularly go in

“Very nice actually, mild bit of malt and very smooth” – Vulcan, The Poynton Brewery

“This ale from Newport, South Wales was a delicious dark malty hoppy sweetish ale. More was had” Cwtch, Tiny Rebel Brewing Co

“Lovely chocolate nose. Initial sweetness, hint of marshmallow, tempered by a roast bitter finish. Good session stout” Marshmallow Stout, Seven Bro7hers Brewery

So not war and peace – but descriptive

If you’re old enough to remember Jilly Goolden in Food & Drink – be as descriptive about the beer as she was about wine

SOUNDS FUN SO FAR – WHAT ELSE?
Well there’s gamification at the heart of the app – which means you get badges for each check in

Everything from “I Believe In IPA” to “Wheel Of Styles” to “Photogenic Brew”

The more you do on the app the more badges you unlock

This is serious stuff 😉
